Kalgoorlie was founded on gold and if you really want see gold when you come to Kalgoorlie head for WA Museum of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The Museum houses the most secure public access vault in Australia where you'll find the first 400ounce refined gold ingot poured in Kalgoorlie along with half the State gold collection. There are also nuggets on display from private owners along with other treasures like a real live Melbourne Cup.

The museum building was originally the 'British Arms' built in 1899 and said to be the narrowest pub in the Southern Hemisphere. Today it houses Dr Rout's dental surgery, along with a stunning recreation of a wedding breakfast.

Outdoor displays include the first Western Australian bank, a sandalwood camp, Miner's cottage and Woodline Police Office. You can even take a ride in the glass-front lift up the mighty Ivanhoe head frame.

The museum is located in Kalgoorlie's main street and is open seven days a week from 10 till 4.30 with short tours conducted at 11and 2.30. Entry is free but feel free to make a donation.
