At Harvest Lakes in the southern Perth suburb of Atwell construction is underway for a community village will forms the platform for the Western Australian Government's plans for sustainable land development and housing.

Harvest Lakes is Western Australia's first (and Australia's biggest) HIA GreenSmart village. It is about 25 minutes from Perth city by car and 16 minutes by train when the South West rail link opens in 2006.

Over the next 5 to 6 years, one thousand home sites will be developed here and Harvest Lakes will eventually be home to an estimated 3500 people.

The WA Government's LandCorp has brought together government, the community and industry, in an integrated package of sustainable practices that are commercially viable.

This week on Home in WA, Landcorp's Chief Executive Officer, Ross Holt explains what is meant by "sustainability" and how the concept is being applied at Harvest Lakes

If initial land sales are any indication, the notion of "living in harmony with nature" rests very easily with West Australian families. The first release of 53 lots in November sold out very quickly and 47 of the 52 second release lots went on the weekend they were released.
