On the first of January this year, something happened in the world of construction. A new waste levy came into effect and it meant that builders had to have a serious look at what they discarded.

One Perth builder has lead the way. Homebuyers Centre won Excellence in Recycling for their Poseidon home, the second year in a row they've picked up the title.

Master Builders WA waste consultant Michael Norriss helps explains how the MBAWA is encouraging builders to improve their waste management practices. Actions such as automated scheduling, site mangers ensuring left over materials are taken to another site, separate bins for timber offcuts, contractors picking up leftover materials and recycled sand for house slabs.

Master Builders in partnership with the Waste Authority NO2 have produced a guide for members and finding it couldn't be easier. mbawa.com

This of course saves money on landfill disposal, creates a safer workplace and above all, is kinder to our environment. Contemporary building indeed. And almost certainly the direction the industry has to steer.
