Apprentice commencements in the building and construction industry have fallen 30% over the last two years, and the lack of new trainees has led to concern that this might mean a severe skills shortage in the future.

Committed to the ongoing sustainability and improvement of the Industry, the Master Builders Association is making it a priority to address the drop in the number of people enrolled in training and it's working closely with members and other stakeholders to increase apprenticeship numbers.

Master Builders are making it easier for builders and subcontractors to find apprentices, with an aim for our members to take on 100 additional apprentices by the end of the year.  To this end, they have created a new section on their website that helps employers find apprentices in 5 easy steps. There are also greater builder incentives, a new Apprentice mentoring scheme and a series of events including the Apprentice of the Year Awards.

An apprenticeship is a great way to begin a rewarding career in the building and construction industry with a huge range of opportunities available in everything from carpentry, bricklaying and plumbing, through to estimating, building surveying, sales or project management.
There's such a great variety of career paths in the construction industry and many of them don't require you to go to university to have a well paid, rewarding career. And to top it off, the skills your acquire can be used anywhere in the world, so your options are endless.
To find an apprentice, or to find an employer wanting to start an apprentice, head to the careers section of And if you'd like to find out more about apprenticeships in general, is a great online portal where you can find everything you need.
