The building sector of W.A. is supported by the Master Builders with their Apprentice of The Year Awards.

The objective of the Awards is to recognise the best apprentices that are currently working within the building and construction industry.  These apprentices are employed by direct indenture with one employer and also through Group Training partners Skill Hire, ABN Training and Department of Finance – Building Management & Works.

The construction industry employs around 10% of people in WA but many of us don’t recognise the opportunities it can offer.
One of the many bonuses the industry offers is that jobs in construction are transportable. You can work in many countries around the world and of course other states or territories in Australia.

Construction offers great career paths. You start as an apprentice, or study at TAFE or University, and then you can choose from diverse opportunities from trades such as carpentry, bricklaying, and plumbing, through to estimating, building surveying, sales or project management.
There are residential, commercial, industrial, retail and civil construction jobs from small domestic works to major billion dollar projects to work on.
The overall winner was a bricklayer, James Nicholson, who works for Australand, supported by the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Foundation.

The Master Builders Association is also helping to increase the number of apprenticeships in WA.

In an age where skilled labor shortages make it difficult to obtain high quality trades people, let alone train them, the Master Builders is certainly doing its part. They’re training skilled workers to build our homes, schools, hospitals, roads and bridges.
