The City of Swan (formerly the Shire of Swan) is the largest metropolitan local government area within Metropolitan Perth. It is one of the fastest growing urban corridors and is the regional centre for the eastern corridor of metropolitan Perth. The City is also the northern and eastern gateway from Perth to greater Western Australia, with both the Great Northern and Great Eastern national highways passing through Midland.

The City marks the boundary between the coastal plain and the Darling escarpment, agricultural lands, national parks and large and growing urban areas. Residents and visitors are attracted to the rural and urban character, natural features, and historical significance of the region.

The City boasts the largest river frontage in Perth and is home to the Swan Valley, a renowned Viticulture area with a proud history of table grape cultivation and fine wine production.

Midland is the City's centre, located 16 kilometres north east of the Perth GPO.

The City of Swan has 33 suburbs gathered into twelve precincts, extending from Ballajura and Malaga in the west, to Gidgegannup in the east and from Bullsbrook, parts of Chittering in the north to South Guildford and the Helena Valley in the south.

The municipal district contains major commercial and industrial areas, older established and new residential areas, and traditional and hobby farming areas. The district includes major recreational park areas, the magnificent Swan Valley and significant Aboriginal and European heritage sites.
