No matter where you live in WA, water is always going to be an issue in the garden but having a Waterwise garden doesn't mean you have to compromise on plant choices, there's Waterwise plants to suit any type of garden.

Natives are always a good choice and there's a huge range of varieties available for home gardens now  from trees through to ground-covers and most will do well on watering once or twice a week during summer.

Succulents also make great additions to a Waterwise garden.  And there's so many different types -from flowering varieties through to succulents with coloured foliage that makes them look like flowers.

You can also grow produce in a Waterwise garden.  Fruits like citrus and olives can flourish in a Mediterranean climate like ours, as can herbs like lavender and rosemary.  And whether your garden is Waterwise or not, there are some easy ways to help you use less water in any garden.

A soil wetting agent like Seasol Super Soil Wetter and Conditioner increases the 'wettability' and water holding capacity of hard to wet soils, which allows for deeper penetration of the water into the root zone.

This one has the added bonus of a soil conditioner and Seasol – so as well as improving overall growth and performance -it also increases the uptake of essential nutrients, so apply three or four times a year to your whole garden - including the lawn - to ensure that its making the most of the water it is getting.

Ongoing, regular doses  of Seasol are also great for a healthy Waterwise garden.  Seasol thickens plant cell walls so it makes them more resistant to drought.  It also encourages healthy and vigorous root growth, so roots can get to water held deeper within the soil.

And perhaps the most important step to a healthy Waterwise garden - a good layer of mulch.  Mulching  stops moisture being lost from the soil by evaporation and it also helps to keep plant roots cool under the summer sun.

You can pick up Seasol, PowerFeed and Seasol Super Soil Wetter and Conditioner in a variety of easy-to-use packs from all good Garden Centres and Retailers.
