We’ve all heard the saying, ‘aim for the stars?’ Well, as of May next year, the minimum requirement for energy efficiency of new homes will need to go from 5, to 6 star rating.

In the long term, what that means for householders will be huge savings in energy costs throughout the life of the home…and of course doing their bit for the environment.

According to the experts at Master Builders, the step from 5 stars to 6 stars will continue to provide people with more comfortable homes to live in. A 6-star house will provide energy savings up to 25%. You see, what many people don’t know is that many of the older houses we live in now, wouldn’t even achieve 2 stars! Imagine how much hard earned money is going down the gurgler…

In winter, we usually warm ourselves up with heating and in summer we crank on the air-con, but with poor insulation and old, tired windows it makes for a very low energy rated home.

By insulating your walls or roof, orientating your house well on the block you can reduce energy usage - saving on heating and cooling costs.
Even if you had an old house you could insulate or retrofit double glazed Windows and Doors, like ENVIROVISION – all this will save wasted energy.

Master Builders Technical Manager Romina De Santis says a 6-star rating will not only improve the way we build for our climate, it will save on lighting, heating and cooling costs of our home as well as reduce our carbon footprint.

“Understanding your block and finding designs to suit it is a great start rather than trying to put a square peg in a round hole.”

The housing industry is preparing for this change by designing and building new display homes that meet the minimum 6-star requirement.

Master Builders has a training facility for builders who want to know more about energy efficiency and energy rating so they can give new home owners the best available options to suit their needs and budgets.
A number of builders are already providing 6 star rated homes.

Commodore Homes has designed this 6-star rated display home here in Alkimos.

Homeowners will feel the benefits when they compare the cost of running a new home like this compared to an older lower star rating home.

Brand Manager for Commodore Homes Andrew Shue says, “Simple changes to design, orientation and choosing the right materials makes a massive difference to the efficiency of your building. We have orientated this building north south with appropriate eves for shading East West.”

“We have also ensured that our glazing and insulation give us good thermal performance, with limited increased construction costs.”

If you want to optimise the performance of your home, Master Builders have expert assessors and member builders that can calculate ratings and suggest improvements.

Master Builders also do courses that train members in the new ratings and energy efficiency.
