For nearly a Century, St Patrick’s Cathedral in Bunbury sat on the hill overlooking its people. A landmark of courage, love and vision…but six years ago a violent storm ripped through Bunbury, destroying the city’s beloved Church.

It was so fierce the tornado lifted the roof off, and damaged the cathedral so badly it had to be entirely demolished. But despite the challenges presented, local company Perkins Builders won the 17 million dollar challenge to build Australia’s first new Cathedral in over 60 years.

St Patrick’s Cathedral re-opened in March and was dedicated on the Feast Day of its patron saint. The new cathedral doesn’t have stained glass anymore…but instead features full-length laminated windows holding specially commissioned artworks by WA artist Robert Juniper and a bell tower with bells cast in Holland.

This all encompasses the Perkins motto, “strength from the past, vision for the future”. Two brothers, Jim and Neville Perkins started the business 65 years ago and it is now owned and managed by Dan Perkins.

Perkins now build State-wide and employ an experienced team of more than 90 people across their offices and construction sites in Bunbury, Busselton and Perth.  The company is an industry leader in training and employs no fewer than 12 apprentices.

And if you’ve been lucky to dine at Fraser’s Restaurant in Kings Park, you’ll be delighted to know Perkins is currently contracted to turn this outdoor marquee venue into one of the State’s most impressive purpose built facilities.

When finished, it will incorporate the new State Reception Centre, catering for up to 700 guests and boasting a stunning 180degree panoramic view of the Swan River and Perth City. It’ll be completed in time to host this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October.

Perkins has put their brand to many projects...one of them is this old trusty pub – the Highway Hotel. It was once a worker’s pub where you could get a bed, beer and a meal – but as you can see it’s been fully gutted and will be getting a complete refurbishment and the addition of a new Dan Murphy’s liquor outlet. You’ll be able to toast its completion date in a couple of month’s time.

Recent projects also include the award-winning Manea College in Bunbury. The 22 million dollar senior school has been built on a steeply sloping site between Bunbury ECU and TAFE campuses. Polished concrete floors and coloured off-form concrete walls are a huge design feature.

So as you can see, Perkins Builders lends its skills to new Commercial building, right through to Heritage and Restoration, Government contracts and more.
