The new Building Commission, established as a division of the Department of Commerce, consolidates the majority of the State’s building regulation into a single point of contact for building matters. It will provide a wide range of information and services for people who work in the building and construction industry and for consumers of building services.
The Building Commission brings together the functions of the Builders Registration Board, the Painters Registration Board and the Plumbers Licensing Board. It will be the leading provider of building industry practitioner registration and licensing and will develop and administer building and technical standards. It will also link with training and education providers to promote careers and opportunities in the building industry.

With a team of around 120 staff, the Building Commission will provide information on plumbing, painting and building standards, the Building Code of Australia, national plumbing standards and sustainability standards.  They also work closely with the building departments of local councils to ensure that new building standards are understood and enforced.

Establishing one single entity for most building regulation matters will make the whole building process more streamlined, consistent and transparent.  And whether you are starting a building project as a homeowner or working in the industry, it’ll be much easier to find the information or advice you need. They can also provide advice on resolving disputes that arise during the building process and anyone can access their expertise.

Easily understood information covering a wide range of topics like dividing fences, swimming pools and illegal building works can be accessed at the Building Commission at 31 Troode Street City West, just a short walk from the train station or easy parking at City West or give them a call on 1300 489 099
