More than half of the waste going to landfill in metropolitan WA is construction and demolition waste.  The good news is that the industry and Master Builders are working hard to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

According to Geoff Cooper from the Master Builders Association, “Builders and subcontractors can do lots of things to reduce their waste.   First, they can reduce waste when they are purchasing supplies, with minimal packaging and also by cutting their wasteage allowances.   Also, when ordering, they can choose prefabricated materials which can cut onsite waste.   Next, they can at some sites sort their waste streams, which can reduce their disposal costs.  Builders can also reuse and recycle some materials, in preference to disposing of them.”

The Master Builders Association has put together a Waste Management Guide that includes a list of waste recyclers in WA and has lots of useful contacts for builders and contractors.
