We often don’t realise that commercial construction is a very big sector of the property market.
In fact, last year there was more than $3billion of commercial construction in WA. And there is one organisation in Western Australia that assists and awards builders who have made significant construction contributions. The Master Builders Association.

Master Builders recognises the achievements of the commercial construction industry in WA in its high profile Master Builders BankWest Excellence in Construction Awards. This includes the building of office towers, shopping centres, factories, schools, and police stations.
And this year, the Awards attracted a record number of entries, reflecting our buoyant construction market.

BGC Construction is the Overall Winner of the Master Builders – BankWest Excellence in Construction Awards in 2008 for its renovation and construction work on the St John of God Health Care building in Subiaco.

The project also won the Best Refurbishment or Renovation of any Building Over $10 million category. The St John of God Hospital project included the extension of the hospital’s main building, refurbishment of existing theatres and cath labs, a new  Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre, and a multi-storey car park.
A new chapel, café, retail shop, road works and extensive landscaping were included in the major construction works.

The awards are the MBA’s way of promoting good building practises and awarding excellence in the industry. There were a record number of entries this year covering work valued in excess of 1 billion dollars. The winners should be proud to have won amongst such a large field of entrants.

Another major Master Builders Association Award is the Subcontractor of the Year Award, and for 2008, it has been presented to AVP Constructions for their work at The Next Generation Health Club in Kings Park. This award was sponsored by CBUS, provider of superannuation services to the building industry.

AVP Constructions is a specialist commercial pool designer. It was a significant achievement to complete these projects with such high quality in an environment
where skilled labor shortages made it difficult to reach that high quality in the agreed timeframes, especially with our booming WA economy.

Each of the WA winners will compete in the national Master Builders awards in Canberra on 14 November this year.
