This week on the show we head to Kalgoorlie and visit the Historical Exchange Hotel, it’s was built way back in the late 1800’s in a time when most of the customers would arrive on horse back.  Back when Kalgoorlie was known as Hannan’s before there was a Police station and post office there was only 2 Hotels in Town one was called ‘The Club” which no longer exists and the other was ‘The Exchange “
In those days, the value of land was quite low the Exchange Hotel lot of land and the adjoining lot were bought for only 50 pounds, bargain! and the  hotel was run by a Mrs Egan who was well known amongst the miner for her great cooking. Most of whom didn’t have wives to cook for them.
The Exchange truly is an iconic place here in Kalgoorlie. It’s  a fantastic venue with 2 bars, there’s “Paddy’s Ale house” which features live music and dance music with an in house DJ“ and The Wild West Saloon”. Which is known in the Goldfield’s for having the most beautiful Skimpies in town.
The Hotel is under going somewhat of a facelift thanks to the new ownership and hope to have the newly refurbished rooms open to the public in the not too distant future.
Back in 1897 a fire broke out in the Exchange Hotel after Captain Davis, Manager of the bank of England mine, fell asleep while smoking. The owner back then Mr Brownlow had decided with the lack of water in the Goldfields to build a water tower next to the Hotel, which was just as well as this water was used by the local fire brigade to put the fire out. A major catastrophe was avoided by having water close at hand.
A must see when you’re in Kalgoorlie. The historical Exchange Hotel. You can’t miss it, it’s on the main Street. 135 Hannan Street.
