Looking for something interesting to do on a weekend is not always easy, especially if you have young children, or you’re watching your pennies.

Home in WA has discovered a unique and thoroughly entertaining way to take in the sights of the 266 hectare Canning River Regional Park, whilst sitting back and relaxing.

A group of train enthusiasts began building a train rail system in 1961 and the Castledare Miniature Train has been providing young and old with a tour around the park on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month ever since. The park is home to a variety of wildlife and water birds and includes many lovely grassy areas to picnic and recreate.

Recently, the trains’ facilities were in need of improvements and the Swan Tafe took on the project of guiding pre apprentices to undertake the steel fabrication and other necessary work to effect the repairs. They also gathered various community groups together to donate product and become involved in the restorative works. One company who didn’t have to be asked twice was Bluescope Lysaght who donated all the steel needed - they even donated a motorized scooter for the best pre apprentice on the job! Other major partners that supported this project were, City Of Cannington, Swan TAFE, BlueScope Steel, Ranbuild and Trustek. Thanks go to all groups and individuals that participated in this very worthwhile project.

So next time you’ve nothing to do on a Sunday, check out the Castledare Miniature Railway, for a great family day out.
