Building a home is a huge investment and there’s a whole lot riding on choosing the right builder.  When it comes to aesthetics, it can be an easy decision decision, but when it comes to making sure you choose someone with the right credentials to get the job done, the choice is more difficult. However, the Builders Registration Act does give you peace of mind.

Under the Act the Builders Registration Board ensures that persons who carry out building construction valued over $20,000 are registered and duly qualified and experienced.
The Act has strict criteria that builders must meet to gain registration. The Board also monitors builders’ compliance with building standards and legislative requirements.
Consumers should make sure that they use a registered builder for any building work valued over $20,000. They should also read the Notice to the Home Owner that the builder is required to give them which sets out in simple language their rights and responsibilities under the building contract.

They should check their plans to make sure everything is included and where they want it because late variations can cost a premium. Also talk to previous clients of the builder.
You can check that a builder is registered simply by searching the Board's Register of Builders or calling the office
