One of the special project responsibilities of The Department of Housing and Works includes overseeing a number of employment initiatives for Indigenous apprentice and trainee schemes. In particular, the Midwest Training Group, in Geraldton.

This unique Indigenous apprenticeship scheme was conceived in 1994. And what makes it unique is that while other group training partnerships use a host builder as a third party, in this case the training organisation, Midwest Training Group, has become a registered builder and employs its apprentices direct.

26 Department of Housing and Works dwellings and a set of offices have so far been completed under this groundbreaking scheme. The quality of the work performed is first class, and MTG Builders recently received industry recognition from the Housing Industry Association when they were awarded a Midwest Housing Award for the Medium Density Home of the Year.

The scheme has employed twenty five indigenous people. 16 of them have completed their traineeships with 13 of these graduating as apprentices and many more are set to do the same.

The indigenous apprenticeship scheme in Geraldton continues to deliver a top quality housing product for the Department of Housing and Works and, most importantly, provides ongoing opportunities for Indigenous people to become qualified tradesmen and women in the construction industry.
