A recent initiative offering young indigenous West Australians work and training in the building industry, could serve as a blueprint for much wider opportunities across the State.

The Building & Construction Industry Training Fund, known as the BCITF, provided funding for the restoration of buildings at historic Fairbridge Village, near Pinjarra south of Perth. The funding specifically provides for the employment of local indigenous workers who might otherwise not find ready placement in the building industry.

The Director of BCITF, Mr Ralph Dawson, says the Fairbridge program has proved an outstanding success and could lead to similar initiatives being established in other parts of regional and remote Western Australia.
The Building and Construction Industry Training Fund was established in 1990 by an Act of Parliament to support the training of eligible people in the building and construction industry. The BCITF collects a small training levy from all construction projects in Western Australia.
