The MBA 'Building Ideas' segment featured a look at initiatives undertaken through 2005.

With the industry still under immense pressure to continue to produce housing stock in W.A, the focus clearly was on skill shortages.

MBA TradeStart provides a smart solution to WA's current skills shortage while providing graduates a gateway into the building industry. MBA TradeStart is a range of six week courses covering specific skills from an industry designed syllabus which can be a launching pad to a long term, specialised career in the building industry.

A range of career paths to choose from....

MBA TradeStart provides short course training in the following unlicensed building trades:

  • bricklaying
  • plastering
  • roof carpentry
  • fixing carpentry, and
  • tiling
The MBA was also proud to host the innaugaral Apprentice of the Year Awards which were held at the Fremantle Esplanade Hotel on the 7th October.

21 year old Michael Smith - currently learning his carpentry trade with Henderson Carpentry Services, was announced Apprentice of the Year.

The night also saw the announcement of the 'Ric New' Medal of Excellence.

Named after the founder of Midland Brick, the Ric New Medal is awarded to a young high achiever under 35 years of age who has demonstrated outstanding potential, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial flair in the context of the building and construction industry in Western Australia. The selection criteria focussed solely upon practical achievements and not academic results.

According to MBA Director Michael McLean, the Ric New Medal was introduced by the late Mr New's daughter, Ms Marylyn New, to recognize the enormous talents among our younger generation and to inspire others to be successful

The Finalists for the 2005 Ric New Medal were:
  • Ray Daly – Site Manager with BGC Construction
  • Leigh Dowie – Site Supervisor with Multiplex Constructions
  • Taryn Johnston – Administration Manager with Plunkett Homes
  • Dean O'Rourke – Building Manager with Dale Alcock Homes
  • Steven Terpstra – a founding Director of Terpstra Enterprises
Robert Spadaccini was the unanimous choice of the judging panel which comprised Michael McLean, former Multiplex Managing Director Geoff Allen and lawyer Michael Blakiston".

Robert Spadaccini, as the Managing Director and owner of Spadaccini Homes, is himself an incredibly high achiever who became a registered builder at the age of 24 and now builds 10-15 luxury homes worth about $5m each year

Apart from the Ric New Medal, Mr Spadaccini receives a return trip to London, $5,000 in expenses and a visit to the Wembley Stadium construction project as his prize
